Dalrymple's latest BMJ column introduces us to Dr. Tobias Venner (1577-1660), an early advocate of "the medicinal value of the waters of Bath, ...brushing the teeth to avoid decay and bad breath, ...bran for the prevention and treatment of constipation" and the dangers of smoking.       Yes, my brother and I met Dalrymple and his wife in 2008 and stayed at their home in the South of France. I took the photo in his kitchen during one of our many long discussions (this one on the joys of being a prison doctor, I think). We trade emails with him from time to time.
